We are often asked how we determine which Coat of Arms to feature in the embroidery. First, one must accept that Heraldry is not an exact science. In the periods of early heraldry, blazons (descriptions) were recorded by hand and accordingly the written records were subject to interpretation. Heraldic writers often differed in their descriptions because of this but also, because Arms granted by Heraldic Authorities were based on, in many cases, the “spoken” word of the registrant.

Many surnames do not have a coat of arms; some have one, others have hundreds. Here at McDougall & Doyle we will attempt to determine the oldest on record. If this is not immediately known, usually the first in a blazon manuscript is chosen; this does not mean it’s the oldest, as suggested by some Heralds. McDougall & Doyle does its best not to use name variants or anglicized versions of a surname; rather, it uses the exact spelling as originally registered.

Please keep in mind that coats of arms were granted to individuals not surnames. A coat of arms that has not been officially registered to you should not be used in any official or public capacity, there is no legal impediment however on hanging up a coat of arms for display only, for which purpose they are superbly fitted, they make exquisite pieces of art in their own right and are of great family interest.
Sports Badges when hand embroidered in gold and silver wire and fine silk can make unique presentation gifts particularly if the member’s name and other details which you can specify (such as years of service to the club, or office held), are included.

Similarly, hand embroidered Service Badges make a distinctive retirement or personalised gift when details such as rank and dates of service are included.

Because all our products are custom-made, and therefore unique to each customer, we ask you to allow us a little time to fulfil your order. Embroideries normally take 8-9 weeks to complete, but just occasionally these timescales may vary.

If your order should take a little longer please bear with us – we endeavour to craft all items to our highest standards first time, and our aim is 100% customer satisfaction.

Very often your old school has a splendid Coat of Arms which we can embroider. By adding the name of a former pupil to the bottom of the work, along with the year of leaving the school, it can make a great gift or a personal momento for the trophy wall!
