Together with coloured threads and background and applied fabrics, metal thread embroidery forms the complete interpretation of the Achievement of Arms, when the colours and metals can be seen in all their glory. The use of gold and silver can help to bring the strongly contrasting colours together into harmony and conveys a stately beauty to the work, underlining the full meaning of the blazoning. This type of embroidery is often used when a show of wealth and splendour is required! A typical example of this is the Great Seal Bag of England which is made for the Seal of each new Monarch. As should be expected, some of the finest examples of heraldic metal thread are shown on the garments of the Heralds themselves. The Heraldry Museum at the tower of London displays a wide selection of items, many of which use metal thread within the embroidery.
